Last night I got lost. Instead of showing up at an event, I found myself on the porch of one of the most interesting homes in San Francisco, having a passionate conversation with two complete strangers. They weren’t meant to be there either.
Earlier that evening, I’d set out to meet a friend and arrived at the address, only to find a quiet and seemingly empty, large Victorian home. Not long after, a random guy arrived and asked if I was there for dinner. I told him that I had no idea what he was talking about – I was there for an event called Opera on Tap.
As we sat on the front porch waiting for friends, I learned that his name was David. David made underwater robots and he’d just returned from a sailing trip on the Sea of Cortez. When I asked David what had inspired the robots, he told me that him and his buddy had heard about an underwater cave in the Sierras and wanted to see if they could find gold. I asked him if they had found any. He said no, but they did put the robots on Kickstarter and raised $100k. That was a year ago and now they have a startup.
David’s partner joined us shortly after and we quickly launched into conversation about exploration, creativity, education and curiosity. Forty minutes passed before we realized that neither of our events were taking place at said location on that particular evening. So I parted ways with my new friends and made my way to the correct address. I later found out that I’d apparently discovered the Embassy San Franciso house, a co-living space full of insanely smart people leading audacious lives.
I share this story in part, because it was a very fun and unexpected Sunday night – the kind of weird event that would only occur if you weren’t actually looking for it. I also share it, because it made me think about how we are all so deeply conditioned to avoid getting lost at all costs. I don’t think getting lost is as scary as it may sometimes seem. In fact, it can actually be really fun. Getting lost has often led to some of my very best adventures.
Next week I’ll be returning to the Embassy Network house to attend Opera on Tap – this time it will indeed be held there. I’m not sure what to expect, but as always I’m excited to discover how one adventure will unfold into another.
